The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963
Before we can dive into Christopher Paul Curtis' novel, let's learn a bit more about him as an author. Let's see if what we find out about Curtis helps us understand him as an author. Read text HERE.
Let's investigate the impact that the bombing of the Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church had on the United States...and possibly the world.

Ray Bradbury's The Veldt
We are going to study Bradbury's use of figurative language in his short story, The Veldt. We will be listening to his story read aloud. Before we listen to his story, read the TEXT. Additionally, on day two when we listen to his piece of fiction read aloud, refer to the handout to identify and offer an explanation for his use of figurative language.
The Conch Bearer
We have followed Anand on his journey, as we did this we have accomplished quite a few things:
+ quoted accurately from the text when explaining what the text says
explicitly and through inferences. (RL.5.1)
+ determined the theme of the text. (RL.5.2)
+ compared and contrasted characters. (RL.5.3)
+ determined the meaning of words and phrases as used in the text,
including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.(RL.5.4)
+ explained how a series of chapters fits together to provide the
overall structure of a particular story.(RL.5.5)
+ described how a narrator's point of view influences how events are
described.(RL.5.6)
Now let's celebrate the end of our journey through an interactive media presentation that summarizes this information that we have learned. We are going to use the site Prezi to create the presentation.
Here is an example of a student's Prezi for The Conch Bearer.
Getting started with Prezi.
Here is an example how to make a Prezi.
Here is a step-by step example that is not animated.
